THE MISFITS (1961)

Gay Langland

The Misfits was Gable's last film, with a script by Arthur Miller and directed by John Huston. Gable played a cowboy named Gay Langland. It was shot on location in the desert flats of Nevada in late 1960. The film was a modern Western centered around three cowboys who live hand-to-mouth, rounding up wild mustangs for a dog food company and a childlike woman who accompanies them in their work. Gable refused to use a stunt double and did all his stunts himself in 105-degree weather. Marilyn Monroe, the leading lady, was a problem for the cast because of her unstable mental condition at the time that taxed the cast and Gable greatly. He felt sorry for her and protected her like a daughter. As a result of all these stressful conditions, the film contributed to his untimely death. The production was completed on November 4th and a few days later Gable suffered a heart attack.
