CAPRA

It Happened One Night (1934)

Frank Capra was the director responsible for the success of the movie. It was the picture no one wanted to make in Hollywood. Gable did not want to do it, but was forced to do so as punishment by MGM for demanding a higher salary. Therefore, MGM loaned him out to Columbia Pictures. Ironically it turned out to be the film that made him a superstar. Gable played a newspaper reporter named Peter Warne on the heels of a spoiled rich heiress named Ellie Andrews, played by Claudette Colbert. Gable enjoyed working with Frank Capra and Claudette Colbert. It became the runaway film hit of 1934, and it won Gable the Academy Award for Best Actor, Colbert for Best Actress, and Capra for Best Director. The film also won for Best Picture of 1934.
